Corpse Reviver No. 1

The Corpse Reviver No. 1 is often overlooked and significantly less popular than its gin-based namesake, the No. 2.  Besides their mutual name and claim to “bring you back from the dead” (a la hair-of-the-dog), these cocktails share very little in common with one another.  For one, this cocktail is far more boozy combining two types of brandy, cognac and apple, with sweet vermouth.  You may use an apple brandy such as calvados, however, you may need to adjust to taste as this version of the recipe was created specifically with the flavor and intensity of bonded applejack.  In any case, I try to use bottles such as this in as many different cocktails as possible to make it “worth it.” Another dissimilarity between the two Corpse Revivers is in the preparation; because it is entirely spirit-forward, convention suggests that No. 1 should stirred and served up in a chilled coupe cocktail glass.  When it comes to garnish, the orange peel compliments the libation without becoming too overpowering to the senses — so much so you may even consider a dash or two of orange bitters right in the cocktail.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it for yourself!

Corpse Reviver No. 1

In your mixing glass, combine the sweet vermouth, applejack, and cognac.

  • 1 oz of Sweet Vermouth

  • 0.5 oz of Applejack

  • 1.5 oz of Cognac

Add ice to your mixing glass and stir until sufficiently chilled (around 25 to 30 seconds).  Strain contents into your chilled coupe glass.  Garnish with an orange peel.

TIP(S):

  1. Chill your cocktail coupe — to extend the life of your Jack Rose, place your cocktail coupe in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can place ice water in your cocktail coupe cocktail glass during the preparation.
