Gimlet

The Gimlet is an extremely refreshing and deceptively simple “up” cocktail and is a wonderful introduction to a gin-based libations.  Comprised of gin, lime juice and simple syrup, the Gimlet is essentially a non-traditional Sour with lime juice in lieu of lemon.  Perfect for those evenings when you are looking something that is more intricate than, say, a Gin & Tonic, the Gimlet is an extremely versatile cocktail that can be tailored to compliment particular flavor preferences (see below for some well-known variations).  Traditionally shaken and served “up” in a chilled coupe cocktail glass, there is nothing wrong serving it down “on the rocks” if that is your preference.  For a long time, that was my personal go-to, however, it’s worth reiterating that “up” cocktails tend to allow for a consistent flavor from start to finish without the risk of further dilution (especially on those hot days). Don’t forget to garnish your Gimlet with either a fresh or dehydrated lime wheel.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it for yourself!

Gimlet

In your shaker, combine the simple syrup, lime juice, and gin.

  • 0.75 oz of Simple Syrup

  • 1 oz of Lime Juice

  • 2 oz of Gin

Add ice to your shaker and shake until it develops a frost. Double-strain the contents (by pouring them from the shaker through a fine mesh strainer) into your chilled coupe glass.  Garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel.

Looking to try something a little different? Try one of these variations:

Southside

The Gimlet with the addition of 3 to 4 mint leaves added to the cocktail shaker, double strained into a chilled coupe cocktail glass. Don’t forget set aside a sprig of mint for garnish.

Eastside

The Southside with the addition of 3 to 4 cucumber slices muddled in the cocktail shaker, double strained into a chilled coupe cocktail glass. Don’t forget to reserve one thin slice of cucumber to garnish.

TIP(S):

  1. Chill your cocktail coupe — to extend the life of your Gimlet, place your cocktail coupe in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can place ice water in your cocktail coupe cocktail glass during the preparation.

  2. Making it on-the-rocks — be sure to shorten the duration of shaking. You will still want to adequately chill the cocktail and not over-dilute.
