Pain(less)killer

The Pain(less)killer is a spirit-free adaptation of the rum-based Painkiller cocktail.  The original cocktail is trademarked and specifies using Pusser’s rum — otherwise, it isn’t a real Painkiller.  With the omission of rum, it is primarily built upon a foundation of pineapple juice, but with the addition of orange and cream of coconut, it still gives you a that familiar tropical flavor.  In the absence of rum, the flavor could seem overly sweet to some, so I adding some lime juice can help brighten up the overall flavor.  In hopes to help avoid confusion, cream of coconut and coconut cream are not the same thing; unless you are making your own cream of coconut, I recommend using either Coco Reàl or Coco Lopez to provide the essential coconut flavor in addition to giving the cocktail the proper consistency.  In order to incorporate the cream or coconut, you will want to shake this cocktail and pour it over crushed ice.  Last, but certainly not least, don’t forget your dehydrated orange wheel and freshly grated nutmeg garnish.  This is a wonderful spirit-free cocktail, however, if you are so inclined, the addition of some dark Jamaican rum is quite delicious… But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it for yourself!

Pain(less)killer

In your shaker, combine the lime juice, orange juice, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice.

  • 0.5 oz of Lime Juice

  • 1 oz of Orange Juice

  • 1 oz of Cream of Coconut

  • 4 oz of Pineapple Juice

Add a small amount of crushed ice to your shaker and shake it until it develops a frost.  Pour the contents (including the ice) into your snifter or goblet and top with additional crushed ice. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a dehydrated orange wheel.

TIP(S):

  1. To make a traditional Painkiller — add 2 oz of Pusser’s Rum or your favorite Dark Rum and omit the lime juice.

  2. Making your own crushed ice — place your ice cubes in either a lewis bag or dish towel and breaking it up with a mallet until reduced to hunks and shards.
