Bourbon Renewal

The Bourbon Renewal is cocktail that builds upon the framework of the non-traditional sour.  Creator Jeffrey Morgenthaler took this tried-and-true combination to the next level with the addition of crème de cassis (black currant liqueur) and Angostura bitters.  The flavor of the black currant liqueur is similar to crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur), which is used in the gin-based Bramble cocktail; crème de cassis is characteristically more tart and compliments the bourbon.  Unfortunately, as mentioned with El Diablo, crème de cassis is not the most prevalent cocktail ingredient, so it may be difficult to justify the bottle taking space in your home bar.  As far as preparing your Bourbon Renewal is concerned, I recommend shaking your ingredients with a small amount crushed ice to help chill and slightly dilute the mixture and top the cocktail with any remaining crushed ice.  If you don’t readily have access to crushed ice, you can make your own by placing some ice cubes in either a lewis bag or dish towel and breaking it up with a mallet, which is a perfect use if you have scrap hunks of clear ice!  Last but not least, don’t forget to slice a lemon wheel to garnish the cocktail.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it for yourself!

Bourbon Renewal

In your shaker, combine the Angostura bitters, simple syrup, lemon juice, crème de cassis, and bourbon whiskey.

  • 1 dash / 0.125 tsp of Angostura Bitters

  • 0.5 oz of Simple Syrup

  • 1 oz of Lemon Juice

  • 0.5 oz of Crème De Cassis

  • 2 oz of Bourbon Whiskey

Add a small amount of crushed ice to your shaker and shake it until it develops a frost.  Pour the contents (including the ice) into your double rocks glass and top with additional crushed ice.  Garnish with a lemon wheel.

TIP(S):

  1. Making your own crushed ice — place your ice cubes in either a lewis bag or dish towel and breaking it up with a mallet until reduced to hunks and shards.
