Revolver

The Revolver is a relatively simple cocktail that illustrates the whiskey and coffee flavor-duo.  Jon Santer, California Bay-Area bartender, created this cocktail as a way to promote Bulleit bourbon, which at the time, was brand new in the market — also, evidently lending some inspiration for the name — combining bourbon whiskey, coffee liqueur, and orange bitters.  As previously mentioned with the White Russian and Espresso Martini, the coffee liqueur really defines the overall flavor.  Kahlúa, one of the more popular brands, tends to register on the sweeter side of the spectrum compared to, say, the sharper flavor of say Mr. Black, which is a cold brew-based coffee liqueur (and personal favorite of yours truly).  When it comes to preparation, this cocktail is typically stirred and served “up” in a chilled coupe cocktail glass, however there is nothing wrong serving it down over a large clear ice cube if that is your preference.  For a long time, that was my personal go-to, however, it’s worth reiterating that “up” cocktails tend to allow for a consistent flavor from start to finish without the risk of further dilution (especially on those hot days). Don’t skip out on the flamed orange peel garnish. Not only this give the presentation a little flair (pun intended), but caramelizes the orange oils as well.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it yourself!

Revolver

In your mixing glass, combine the orange bitters, coffee liqueur, and bourbon whiskey.

  • 2 dashes / 0.25 tsp of Orange Bitters

  • 0.5 oz of Coffee Liqueur

  • 2 oz of Bourbon Whiskey

Add ice to your mixing glass and stir until sufficiently chilled (around 25 to 30 seconds).  Strain contents into your chilled coupe glass.  Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

TIP(S):

  1. Chill your cocktail coupe — to extend the life of your Revolver, place your cocktail coupe in the freezer for at least 15 minutes.  Alternatively, you can place ice water in your cocktail coupe cocktail glass during the preparation.

  2. Flamed orange peel garnish — use a slice of orange peel that has a little extra white pith. If using matches, strike the match and let the sulphur tip burn for a few moments before expressing the orange oils through the flame over the cocktail.
