Americano

The Americano is a classic cocktail (not to be confused with the espresso beverage) that is perfect as a break from some of its stiff contemporaries.  Traditionally consisting of just Campari, sweet vermouth, and generously topped with club soda, this drink is perfect for those who enjoy the flavors of say a Negroni or Boulevardier without the full effect. Because Campari can be bitter, an acquired taste if you will, I tend to gravitate to a version with equal parts Campari and Aperol, a slightly less bitter Italian liqueur that has a brighter flavor profile.  That being said, I think both liqueurs are worthwhile additions to your home bar. Another important ingredient in this libation happens to be another staple ingredient of my home bar: sweet vermouth.  In general, vermouth is a fortified wine (of which sweet vermouth is merely one type) that I like to have on-hand as it is prevalent in countless classic cocktails that use it.  When it comes to preparing my Americano, I build it directly in a highball or Collins glass (in lieu of a mixing glass) before ice and topping with club soda.  Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to garnish with a slice of orange.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it yourself!

Americano

In your Collins glass, combine the Campari, Aperol, and sweet vermouth.

  • 0.75 oz of Campari

  • 0.75 oz of Aperol

  • 1.5 oz of Sweet Vermouth

  • 1 oz of Club Soda (to top)

Add ice to your Collins glass and give it a quick stir before you top with club soda.  Garnish with a half-wheel of orange.
