Hemingway Daiquiri
The Hemingway Daiquiri is a flavorful variation on the classic Daiquiri with additions of grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur. Also referred to as the Papa Doble and the Hemingway Special, the origins of this cocktail trace back to Hemingway’s preference for a stronger and more tart Daiquiri. Although its flavor can be fairly divisive, maraschino liqueur is a crucial ingredient to the Hemingway Daiquiri. If you find the maraschino liqueur too overpowering, you can always cut the maraschino liqueur with simple syrup, but you run the risk of diluting Hemingway’s predilection for his distinctly tart take on the classic. This cocktail is shaken and served “up” in a chilled coupe cocktail glass to allow for a consistent flavor from start to finish without the risk of further dilution (especially on those hot days). But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it for yourself!
Hemingway Daiquiri
In your shaker, combine the lime juice, grapefruit juice, maraschino liqueur, and light rum.
0.5 oz of Lime Juice
1 oz of Grapefruit Juice
0.5 oz of Maraschino Liqueur*
2 oz of Light Rum
Add ice to your shaker and shake until it develops a frost. Double-strain the contents (by pouring them from the shaker through a fine mesh strainer) into your chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
TIP(S):
Chill your cocktail glassware — to extend the life of your chilled cocktail, place your coupe cocktail glass(es) in the freezer for at least 15 minutes for them to be sufficiently. For more immediate use, you can place ice water in your coupe cocktail glass during the preparation. In either instance, remove the glass from the freezer or discard ice water just before you are about to strain the cocktail from the mixing glass.
Cutting your maraschino liqueur — to adjust the presence of the maraschino liqueur, cut it in a 1:1 ratio with simple syrup.
