Hot Buttered Rum

Hot Buttered Rum is a cozy beverage that is guaranteed to keep you warm throughout the winter season.  Simply consisting of dark rum, a spiced butter mixture, and hot water, it’s definitely one of the easier cocktails to make.  Although a dark rum is common, this happens to be one of the few cocktails where you won’t go wrong with spiced rum as a substitute.  Regardless of your rum preference, this cocktail would merely be “hot rum” without its other main component.  Even without a prescriptive recipe, Hot Buttered Rum mixtures (or “batter”) tend to incorporate many of the same spices and flavors.  Plenty of premade Hot Buttered Run “batter” is out there, but I highly encourage you to make the spiced butter mixture on your own.  My go-to recipe is the one found in the Smuggler’s Cove cocktail book; it is both extremely flavorful and easy to make as it calls for household ingredients and spices you may already have on-hand.  When it comes to preparation and presentation, simply combine all of your ingredients directly in your mug and garnished with a cinnamon stick — it can also serve as a stir-stick if it is long enough.  But don’t take my word for it, make one and try it yourself!
